Pochettino: Kane could be a one-club man

first_imgEmbed from Getty ImagesMauricio Pochettino sees no reason why Tottenham cannot hold onto Harry Kane for the rest of the striker’s career.Kane raised his goal tally to 26 this season by netting twice in Spurs’ 3-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon at Wembley in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.“Harry is special because he loves Tottenham and feels Tottenham,” said Pochettino. “It’s like (Francesco) Totti in Italy – only special players spend all their career at one club.“I think Harry is this kind of player that can, because he loves Tottenham. But you can be sure of nothing in football.Embed from Getty Images“We need to be careful how we manage him and then the player needs to choose to stay here. You cannot force everyone to stay.“Our job is to work together and try to achieve all we want. The future is so exciting and we hope we all spend a lot of time together here and try to win trophies.”Spurs were unable to break down their League One opponents until the final half-hour mark, when Kane scored twice in quick succession and a rare goal for Jan Vertonghen made it 3-0.Pochettino added: “Harry is a top-class player and to score twice was important for him, but more important for the team.“I think it was a solid performance. We created a lot of chances, again it was difficult to score but we go into the next round.”See also:Two more goals for Kane as Tottenham see off AFC Wimbledon at WembleySpurs v AFC Wimbledon player ratingsTottenham youngster completes loan move Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

What’s in store for 2016 corn and soybeans?

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest This “spring,” the weather has gone from snow and 24 degrees to sunny and 80 degrees within one week. This unusual weather leaves many of us wondering what’s in store for the remainder of the growing season. In general, unfavorable weather conditions tend to affect soybean yield much less compared to corn yield. In 2012, when we experienced a hot, dry summer, corn yield was reduced by 23% while soybean yield was only reduced by 8% (see the table below). However, under more optimum weather conditions, corn yield gains are much greater compared to soybean. With more ideal weather in 2013 and 2014, corn yield increased 12-14% while soybean yield only increased 2-8%.Table 1. Corn and soybean grain yield averages for Ohio compared to the 5-year average (data from USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service).Corn (bu/acre)Soybean (bu/acre)2015153 (-1%)50 (+2%)2014176 (+14%)53 (+8%)2013174 (+12%)50 (+2%)2012120 (-23%)45 (-8%)2011153 (-1%)48 (-2%)5-Year Ave.15549SoybeansDespite the weather, the state soybean yield does not tend to fluctuate much. Soybean vegetative and reproductive stages overlap allowing the soybean plant to compensate for short periods of stress (see the figure). In 2012, while plants were stunted and there was an increased number of flower abortion due to hot/dry weather conditions, soybean yield was “saved” in many areas of the state due to rainfall in August and September promoting seed fill.  (This was especially true of our later maturing varieties.)CornWith the weather forecast calling for “slightly-above” normal temperatures and “slightly below precipitation” for the remainder of April and similar conditions for May, this year offers an opportunity to plant corn at optimum calendar dates for yield. The recommended time for planting corns across Ohio is mid-April through about the first week of May. Grain yield and test weight are increased by early plantings, whereas grain moisture is reduced, thereby allowing earlier harvest and reducing drying costs. In central Ohio, yields decline approximately 1 to 1.5 bushels per day for planting delayed beyond the first week of May. Early planting generally produces shorter plants with better standability. Delayed planting increases the risk of frost damage to corn and may subject the crop to greater injury from various late insect and disease pest problems, such as European corn borer and gray leaf spot. With earlier planting, vegetative growth is usually complete and pollination initiated prior to the period of greatest moisture stress in July and grain filling occurs during the periods when solar radiation is high which promotes greater accumulation of dry matter in the grain.No-tillage corn can be planted at the same time as conventional, if soil conditions permit. In reality, however, planting may often need to be delayed several days to permit extra soil drying. Corn should be planted only when soils are dry enough to support traffic without causing soil compaction. The yield reductions resulting from “mudding the seed in” may be much greater than those resulting from a slight planting delay. Moreover, given the weather projections for drier and warmer conditions than normal, even with such delays, the crop may be planted before the optimum plant date window ends. There have been occurrences in past years when early to mid-April planting were adversely affected by an abrupt transition from warm, dry conditions to freezing rains and snow. When dry corn seed absorbs cold water as a result of a cold rain or melting snow, “imbibitional chilling injury” may result. Such injury in corn seed can lead to delayed seedling growth and reduced stands so planting right before such large temperature swings should be avoided.Appropriate planting depths for corn vary with soil and weather conditions. There is a perception that shallow planting depths (less than 1.5 inches) are appropriate for early plantings — when soil conditions are usually cool and moist — because seed will emerge more rapidly due to warmer soil temperatures closer to the surface. However, planting shallower than 1.5 inches is generally not recommended at any planting date or in any soil type. Recent Ohio studies that evaluated corn response to seeding depth provide no evidence to support shallow plantings. For normal conditions plant corn at 1.5 to 2-inches deep to provide frost protection and allow for adequate root development. When corn is planted 1.5 to 2 inches deep, the nodal roots develop about 0.5 to 0.75 inches below the soil surface. At planting depths less than 1 inch, the nodal roots develop at or just below the soil surface. Excessively shallow planting can cause slow, uneven emergence due to soil moisture variation, and rootless corn (“floppy corn syndrome”) when hot, dry weather inhibits nodal root development. Shallow plantings increase stress and result in less developed roots, smaller ears and reduced yields.last_img read more

See Adobe AIR 2’s Best New Features Demoed in 9 Sample Apps

first_imgToday Adobe released new beta versions of the company’s Flash Player and AIR. The Flash Player 10.1 technology now includes HTTP streaming and hardware decoding of H.264 video. The company plans to bring the updated Flash Player to mobile devices too, starting with the Palm Pre and then completing versions for other major smartphones by the first half of 2010 (with the notable exception of the iPhone, of course). However, out of the two updates, it’s Adobe AIR 2 that received the biggest overhaul. The new runtime allows developers to create entirely new types of applications that simply weren’t possible using AIR 1. What sort of apps are those? Adobe’s gallery of sample apps should give you some ideas of what’s to come. 1. Mass Storage DetectionIn Adobe AIR 2, apps can now detect when a mass storage device has been inserted into the computer. That means the app can “see” your USB flash drives, external drives, and even some digital cameras. For example, developers could build an app that recognizes when your Flip camera is plugged in and lets you automatically upload videos to YouTube. To demo this capability, Adobe has released FileTile, a sample app that does just this (minus the video uploading). FileTile recognizes external devices and lets you see the files and open them with their default application. Other FeaturesOther features in Adobe AIR 2 include the following (courtesy of Rob Christensen):A new API lets you open documents with its default application Global error handling Enhanced printing support, including vector printing support on Mac and new APIs to query the local machine for a list of printers or print without a dialog box. WebKit in AIR 2 is now based on the version shipped with Safari 4.0.3 which includes support for JavaScript profiling, SquirrelFish Extreme JavaScript engine performs 50% faster using SunSpider tests, CSS3 Module support (2D transformations, transitions, animations, gradients, zoom and WebKit CSS selectors), styling scrollbars via CSS and Canvas enhancements. IPv6 format addresses can now be used with all APIs that accept an IP string as input. Increased maximum size of NativeWindow: AIR 2 apps can have a window size of 4095 x 4095 where before the maximum was 2880 x 2880. DNS lookup Network interface enumeration Database transaction savepoints Screen reader support in Windows IME API and IME text input enhancement Smaller runtime installer sizes More efficient CPU usage and reduced memory size Download Installer | Source | How to5. Peer-to-Peer Networking CapabilitiesAdobe AIR 2 also adds support for new networking capabilities including UDP, secure sockets and peer-to-peer. To demonstrate the possibilities, Adobe released KeePIPE, a javascript app that lets users on the same network share files using peer-to-peer technology. It also lets VMWare users transfer files between a virtual machine and a host computer. Native Process API The native process API allows developers to better integrate their AIR apps with existing code libraries or extend their apps using native code. With the new native process API, this can now be done without compromising the cross-platform capabilities of AIR which allows it to run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Developers using this new functionality can now deploy their apps with operating-specific installers like .exe, .dmg, .rpm, and .deb instead of an .air installer file. To demonstrate the native process API, Adobe released SearchCentral, an application that taps into Mac OS X’s Spotlight feature for desktop searches. It also lets you do web searches on Google and Wikipedia. Installer | Source | How toHere’s a video explaining in more detail how the native API works:3. Microphone Data AccessLike it sounds, the microphone data access feature lets you acquire the sound data from a computer’s microphone without the need of a server. For example, a developer could build a note-taking application that lets users record audio clips even when they’re offline. To get started, a simple app called Microphone is now available which does recording and playback with variable playback speeds supported. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Download Installer | Source | How to4. Drag-and-Drop Support for Remote FilesThe new “file promises” feature of AIR 2 lets you drag remote files out of an AIR application. A file promise, as described by Adobe’s Christian Cantrell, is “what you put on the clipboard when you want the user to be able to drag and drop files that do not yet exist, or that exist elsewhere (not locally on your machine).” It’s a promise to deliver a file at some point, but not an actual file. For example, an app could generate a CSV file but only when a user tries to drag and drop the file. It could also refer to files on a remote server, like an FTP server. When a user grabs that remote file and pulls it into the AIR app, the app could then download the data. It even supports files accessible via a URL like those hosted on Google Sites. Multi-TouchPerhaps the most exciting enhancement in AIR 2 and in Flash Player 10.1 are the new multi-touch APIs. In Windows 7, AIR apps can respond to multi-touch and in both Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard, they can respond to gestures. In this video (below), Adobe’s Kevin Lynch demos a multi-touch app on an HP TouchSmart computer:Obviously, Adobe is excited about this new feature, too, because they’ve released not one but four sample applications that demonstrate multi-touch in action:GeoTest: Lets you move images around the screen using a built-in physics engine. Jason Day Deserves An Ovation But Give The Field A Golf Clap

Heading into last weekend’s PGA Championship, Australia’s Jason Day had cracked the top five in nearly a third of the major championships he’d entered. He finished in the top 10 nearly half of the time. But he’d never hoisted one of those shiny trophies they give the tournament winner. That changed Sunday, when Day won the PGA Championship, breaking the record for lowest to-par score (-20) in a major.Yet Day’s record-shattering performance also highlights just how easy it was to go under par at the majors this season. While Day’s week at the PGA ranks No. 1 according to cumulative strokes below par, it’s nowhere near the best in modern history1Which, for the purposes of this article, began in 1958 — the first year the PGA Championship adopted a stroke-play format. if we examine it using our familiar z-score system, which measures each performance relative to the field (by how many standard deviations a player’s score was below the field average, for players who made the cut).Z-scores reward not only excellence relative to par, but also dominance in comparison to one’s peers on the same course at the same time. And Day’s competitors also shot very well when held up to Whistling Straits’ par-72 standard: The average of players who made the cut was 3.6 strokes under par, which ranks fifth-lowest of any major tournament since 1958. That number explains the big disconnect between Day’s amazing to-par score and his middling (by major-winning standards) z-score:Last weekend’s low-scoring PGA Championship also capped off a season of great performances by the field in majors. July’s British Open featured the lowest to-par scoring average (-5.6) of any major since 1958, and April’s Masters Tournament (-2.4) ranked 11th-lowest. Combined, this year’s quartet of majors saw the lowest scoring average (relative to par) of any season since 1958, and the only time in that span that the average cut-maker across all majors in a season was under par.The majors in 2014 ranked second-lowest, so we’re seeing an unprecedented spate of low-scoring performances in recent seasons, though it’s not clear what’s driving the trend. We can turn to the usual sources of speculation: technological improvements outstripping course designs, a (subconscious?) movement toward friendlier scoring conditions to improve golf as a television product, an incredible font of young talent emerging in the wake of Tiger Woods’s heyday, etc.Whatever the cause, it’s leading to players like Day going low on the game’s biggest stage, even if their performances aren’t historically great relative to their peers. He didn’t win the PGA Championship, but Jordan Spieth is still having one of golf’s greatest seasons. read more
