Flu epidemic may be slowing, CDC says

first_img In an advisory sent via the CDC’s Health Alert Network today, the agency stressed the value of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) for treating or preventing flu. “Recent studies suggest a considerable protective effect against complications associated with influenza when neuraminidase inhibitors are used for treatment,” the notice says. “These benefits include reducing the risk of death among older adults hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.” The CDC has reported that two of the three flu types (H3N2 and B) in this year’s vaccine are not closely matched to the viruses in circulation. The latest surveillance report provided further evidence of that. Laboratories in the CDC’s surveillance network tested 7,726 specimens for influenza last week, of which 2,321 (30.0%) were positive, the report says. The previous week, 34% of 6,889 tested specimens were positive. Three flu-related deaths in children were reported last week, and one previously reported death was reclassified as not due to flu, the CDC reported. Twelve pediatric deaths attributed to flu were reported the previous week. The total for this season now stands at 24. The agency continues to advise against using the two older flu drugs, amantadine and rimantadine, because of high levels of viral resistance. See also: Treatment should begin within 48 hours after illness onset if possible, but treatment should be considered for patients who present later than that if they are very sick or have an increased risk of serious complications, the agency said.center_img In today’s advisory, the CDC said, “Preliminary results from a rapid assessment of vaccine effectiveness suggest that currently available influenza vaccines provide some protection against influenza virus infection requiring medical care. However, the level of protection is likely to be lower than what is observed in seasons in which the vaccine strains are closely matched to circulating influenza virus strains.” Today’s surveillance report says that 6.8% (38 of 557) of the flu viruses tested so far this season had a mutation that confers resistance to oseltamivir. All the resistant viruses were the H1N1 subtype. That’s significantly higher than was observed last season, but in today’s advisory the CDC said the overall resistance level is still considered low. At the same time, the CDC issued a notice aiming to remind clinicians to consider prescribing the antiviral drugs known as neuraminidase inhibitors to treat or prevent flu. Feb 29, 2008 (CIDRAP News ) – This year’s influenza epidemic showed signs of tapering off last week, but flu was still widespread in every state except Florida, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported today. For the week that ended Feb 23, 5.7% of visits to the CDC’s network of sentinel healthcare providers were for influenza-like illnesses (ILI), a decrease from the 6.4% reported the previous week, the agency said. The percentage of visits for ILI decreased in seven of nine regions across the country, whereas it increased in six of the nine regions the week before. CDC flu surveillance report read more

Learn the key solutions to take advantage of the world’s largest source of tourists – the Chinese market

first_imgBut how much do we know the profile of Chinese guests? What do they want? How do they behave and what interests them? How do you even get to the Chinese market and attract attention? How do you tell them your story? How to do promotion in the Chinese market? How do we welcome our Chinese guests? There are many preconditions, consumer behaviors, and potential pitfalls that are unique to how things are done in international markets that are listed in the report. Chinese tourists make up 20% of the global tourism market, which is only growing from year to year. Thus, Chinese tourists are also in the focus of our tourism workers, but in order to capture a part of the market, we must be aware that this is a totally new and specific market. The report is intended for hotels, tourist destinations, caterers and providers of various lifestyle services, and for the Croatian market it is brought to us by ProConcept, which specializes as a leading advisory agency for the Chinese market, and which will soon bring the author to Croatia for a special b2b workshop. One of the important pieces of information in the report that we need to be aware of is how most Western internet and mobile apps, such as Google, PayPal, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Quora, etc., are censored by China’s Great Firewall. Related news: Report Marketing towards the Chinese outbound tourism market – Inside view, you can download for free HERE All in all, the report provides an excellent initial insight into the Chinese market, and it would certainly be commendable for tourism professionals to adopt them, so as not to make beginners mistakes and thus close the door to the day-to-day development of Chinese tourists in their destinations and facilities. People in China are known to have a collectivist approach in sharing personal experiences. They are loyal followers of “promotion by word of mouth,” the report said. For hoteliers new to the field of promotion to Chinese tourists abroad, it would be unrealistic to expect the problem to be solved by simply hiring any traditional marketing agency. This is the only such report produced and published after 2001 when China joined the WTO, which only gives even more importance to the same. The report answers these questions: Marketing towards the Chinese outbound tourism market – An inside look , which she made Joanne Chan of IPPWORLD, which gives us just a look at the Chinese tourism market. Because, as the report says, Chinese tourists are extremely prone to word-of-mouth marketing, ie word of mouth is most important to them. The Chinese Institute for Tourism Research (COTRI) states that the number of Chinese who traveled abroad in 2017 exceeded the figure of 145 million. COTRI also predicts that by 2030 that figure will reach 400 million.last_img read more

Tourism and urbanism: Apartmentization and concreting are big problems of our coast

first_imgWhen asked about the assessment of the situation in Makarska, Vrban said that there are good examples of construction, but also worse ones. “Not so bad. Concreting has happened, but we can rehabilitate it. It is important to reach a solution through dialogue. The great thing is that the Ministry of Construction is there”, He said. “An investor will not shell out serious money if he has no basis. It is up to the state to define the framework because the key issue is the ratio of hotels to apartments. In Greece, this ratio is 62% in favor of hotels, in Austria 60%, in Spain 54%, and in Croatia 16% is hotel accommodation, and 84% are private apartments and camps. That is why we achieve lower prices because this ratio affects the quality of the destination, and thus the quality of guests. It is not the responsibility of those who have invested in private accommodation, the problem is the framework that brings us here. We capitalize 68% of the price of our competitors. The reason is the structure of accommodation that affects the structure of the destination. The situation is not ideal. It is great that we opened this topic, this is not a conflict between private individuals and hoteliers. When you have a large number of guests in a small space it is difficult to maintain the infrastructure and environment”, Said Drago Nosić, director of the Biokovo and Miramare hotels. If a destination is a term for illegal construction, excessive construction and destruction of space, then it is Makarska. But it is not too late for Makarska, is the opinion of Ante Vrban, although there are many things that must be better. “I hadn’t been to Makarska for 15 years, so as soon as I arrived I drove around the city to see what was happening in the meantime. There are good examples, but also those that are not good. I understand investors, and I work for them, who want their investments to pay off. I’m here to tell you that it’s not important to build a big building, you can make money on beautiful, smaller, quality facilities that fit nicely into the environmentHe said. “We organized the conference to stop construction predators conquering space for their own profit without taking into account the public good. This is not only a problem of Makarska, we read what is happening in Mandrač on Korčula, on Brač, it is a problem of our entire Adriatic”, Said in her introductory speech Hloverka Novak Srzić, director of the Tourist Board of the city of Makarska. Minister Štromar continued and confirmed that urbanization is growing and that the infrastructure capacities are not of sufficient quality. “How to protect these beauties that Makarska has? Maybe it’s already 12 and 5, but come 12 and 20, let’s find out where Makarska is goingHe said. The Mayor of Makarska, Jure Brkan, reminded that Makarska lives from tourism, and the beginnings of problems that appear in urban terms appeared when resorts were built, thus raising the number of visitors, and the infrastructure did not follow. “Today, we strive to increase the quality of hotel facilities, but we do not make such a step forward with 4 or 5 star hotels. It happens to us that apartment buildings are starting to be rented and that is why we have an urban boom”, He explained.center_img The panel discussion began with a presentation by Željko Uhlir, who believes that the biggest problem is the conversion of apartments into apartments, which represents a great pressure on the infrastructure and quality of the destination. “Our Department of Physical Planning knows how to renovate a space to be of better quality and more attractive. Quality spatial plans and urbanism, as well as the rehabilitation of the area will help to gain a better clientele and increase earnings. Good urbanism can carry out rehabilitation and regeneration of space”, He concluded. The conference discussed the need for sustainable and planned development of our coast, smart capacity building and activating the local population in designing and building the space in which they live, but also problems such as overbuilding, apartmentization and concreting faced by many tourist places on our coast. A conference called “Tourism and Urbanism” was held in Makarska, organized by Večernji list, Poslovni dnevnik and the Makarska Tourist Board, which brought together experts from various fields such as Predrag Štromar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction and Physical Planning, Ante Vrban, one from the best European architects, Željko Uhlir, State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction and Physical Planning, Sanja Šaban, Assistant Minister, Drago Nosić, director of the Bikovo and Miramara hotels and Hrvoje Bot, director of the company Održivo oko, Poslovni dnevnik reports. After the conference, Mayor Brkan concluded that the dialogue was open. “It was very useful. There are problems, inherited, long-term, difficult to solve, but it is possible to solve them with the necessity of consensusHe said. He also stressed that the Ministry of Environmental Protection is slowing down certain processes. “We are constantly looking for a final solution to the amendments to the spatial plan that were launched in 2015 but have not yet entered into force. We want to introduce more restrictive measures in housing construction, but the Ministry of Environmental Protection has instructed us to make an additional Strategic Environmental Assessment of the plan, we work, but we issue building permits under the current spatial plan from 2006. There is a problem”, Concluded Brkan. Source / photo: Business diarylast_img read more

New catalog and internet platform of Opatija for the promotion of congress tourism

first_imgIn addition to public spaces such as the Marino Cvetković Sports Hall, Zora Cultural Center, Villa Antonio and the Gervais Center, which has already become one of the most sought after locations for organizing various events and manifestations, this edition included numerous investments of hotel houses that raised the quality of accommodation. capacity, but also congress facilities. The new catalog also brings an interesting overview of the capacities available to Opatija, so it states that in the congress offer of this city there are 53 halls that can accommodate a total of 9.563 participants. Of this number, six are large halls for more than 500 participants, and the largest number of meeting rooms for up to 50 people and those designed for between 100 and 300 participants – the latter 16 in Opatija, and the smallest a total of 18. If we want to develop congress tourism in a destination, a digital platform on basic business or congress information is the first prerequisite. Congress tourism is one of the key segments of Opatija’s tourist offer, and over the past five years the infrastructure for business meetings has been significantly improved thanks to numerous investments by the public and private sectors. In order to adequately present all the quality content for congress tourism, the Tourist Board of the City of Opatija this year has created a new catalog of congress offer called “Opatija – a congress destination with a tradition.” “Along with health and wellness tourism, congress tourism is the most important motive for the arrival of guests outside the tourist season, which is a period of special interest to us. However, congress tourism is important for Opatija not only because it contributes to strengthening the pre-season and post-season, but also because congress guests have higher consumption in the destination.”Points out the director of the Opatija Tourist Board Suzi Petričić. The catalog “Opatija – congress destination with tradition”, is a technical manual intended for organizers of business meetings, who use it to have a detailed insight into the congress capacities and opportunities that Opatija provides, in one place brings together all information relevant to congress organizers. This includes not only the contacts of the relevant congressional departments, but also other service providers who are equally important for the organization of the business meeting. Among them are specialized agencies from the area of Opatija, the so-called professional congress organizers (PCO), carriers and other agencies, as well as contacts of companies for renting audio and video equipment, translators, cultural and entertainment associations, photographers and others. For most business meetings, the gastronomic offer in the destination is very important, so the catalog gives an overview of restaurants on the Opatija Riviera. And the city of Opatija has finally made that step, and put all the information about congress tourism online through one platform, as well as a special catalog for its promotion, which will be used for b2b tourism fairs and the promotion of congress tourism. The congress catalog and website are made in Croatian and English, a the international promotion of the catalog will take place at the IBTM World congress, which takes place from 19 to 21 November in Barcelona.center_img See more about Opatija’s congress offer HERE In parallel with the creation of the congress catalog specialized websites dedicated to the offer of business meetings have been renewed, available at The infrastructure for congresses and business meetings has been significantly improved in recent years with public and private investments, and the new catalog and website of the Congress and Incentive Bureau bring all important information for business meeting organizers in one place, the City of Opatija points out. “The goal of creating this catalog was to provide the organizers with all the necessary information in one place in order to further motivate them to organize their gathering in our city. Compared to other Croatian destinations, Opatija has several competitive advantages – a long tradition, well-developed accommodation facilities, quality gastronomic offer and additional facilities, but also scientific research, which is increasingly a significant factor in organizing business meetings. Therefore, in the catalog, special emphasis is placed on the multiscientific environment, primarily through the research laboratories of the University of Rijeka, but also the Special Hospital Thalassotherapy ”Petricic explained. In addition to an overview of the congress offer on the website, there is also a calendar of business meetings where you can find information about current meetings held in Opatija, which is important for all stakeholders in the tourist offer in the destination. Users are enabled to enter information about business meetings and enter them in the calendar, so that all congresses in the city can be included in one place.
